Holy crap! After all these years, I finally saw my first Segway!
#1
Wow! Just a few minutes ago, I was on a break from work and finally saw a guy
rolling down the sidewalk on a Segway--an elderly, bearish-looking man-- at the
corner of 43rd Street and 8th Avenue here in Manhattan. Other pedestrians around
seemed to lack curiosity, but I turned my head at the sheer weirdness of the sight.
After having seen countless pictures and videos of them on the web and having
paid attention to all the hyperbole about them many years ago, it was utterly
anticlimactic.

I still think they are cool and would like to have one. I was turned off by all the seqway bashers' attitudes.

They were banned around here years ago.

funny, i saw my first one last week too -- in Napa, CA -- in a fairly residential district

he stopped on the corner and lit up smoke, then i knew why he needed it, lack of breath

There are a number of them around here, operated by geeks. They basically fill exactly the same function as a bicycle, except that they are slower, have no positive effect on your health, and cost waaaaay more money. A solution in search of a problem.

Somebody gives tours of our neighborhood on Segways.

We also vaguely know a couple who have one: I have seen them "walking the dog" by riding on their Segway with the dog on a leash. That somehow seems beyond the pale to me. They appear to be in shape so I guess they are just lazy.

I still think they would be great for urban postal carriers, but I guess they are too expensive.

It was a great comedic device on Arrested Development.

the security officers at the LV mall ride them around.

they're probably quicker than someone running, and quieter.

the guys driving them still look goofy, with their safety helmets on.
