well, you wanted Cube II ...

Guitarist,
I’d actually consider one if along with the new features it had DVR capabilities and might have even bought one now if it had an optical drive. That way, I could ditch the TIVO, VCR, DVD Recorder and DVD player. One box to handle the chores of all these items. People want less gadgets and the AppleTV doesn’t do enough to reduce the clutter. For what it’s worth, my Toshiba RS-TX20 can already handle all of the chores I mentioned in the previous paragraph including TIVO downloads and amazon unbox features. It just doesn’t do HD. One box for all of those tasks. The only reason I'm thinking about replacing it is because I'm moving to HD in the near future. Now, when I think about rentals, the first thing that comes to mind is Video on Demand from cable. If someone has a cable box or a cable box DVR, they have the option to rent movies on demand. No need to buy a separate device for the job. [quote Seacrest]It's a great little machine -- or will be in 2010.
Right now it is overpriced and underpowered. It replaces neither the MacBook on the low-end nor the Pro on the high-end. I have my doubts that it will fly off the shelves, but it a couple years all its innova -- er -- thinnovations will be incorporated into the more mainstream 'Books and everything will be right with the world. "But there is... one more thing!" Seacrest makes an appearance! Best news all day. :p

anybody catch whether the display is glossy or matt?
01-15-2008, 08:17 PM
glossy (you meant on the Air?)

I'm wondering who will buy the ssd model? The glossy screen means it is consumer orientated and I can't see a benefit to a home user that is worth $1000+ to get an sdd. What apps run well enough on a middle of the road processor which can benefit substantially from solid state disk?

ZD Net 1st take on Airbook. Not so swell. I did not realize no replacable battery.

The solid state disk will appeal to the "top-of-the-line" purchasers who want the best laptop that money can buy. For them the extra $1000 price is perfectly fine since they can brag about the new feature to their peers.
The real benefit is durability. Metaphorically speaking, it comes down to choosing an iPod Nano or iPod Classic. The Classic is a better value for having high storage but it is more subject to shock damage. If a person is very hard on their current laptop and is worried that a hard drive failure at the wrong time would be more costly than $1000 up front, this may be the computer for them. The lack of a user-replaceable battery (or any other user-replaceable component from I can see) would likely be a non-issue since these consumers will only have this laptop for a year and will purchase the next great thing next year. To address limited battery life for extended stays away from AC power, third parties will step in with solutions in the same way they did for the iPods with supplementary battery that connects to the power connector.

One could always gamble on a $200.00 Early Adopter rebate.

There's also no Apple Remote included in the box. If you order one, it's an add on in the ordering process.
Lots of stupid little stuff that isn't included. Come on Apple! Weird. Jeff |
