Dammit Minty. You never got to see the Cubbies in the Series. And now we won't get to make it to a game at Petco either.

You'll be missed. bfd always enjoyed getting one of your "mintygrams" …

Rest in peace, bro.

I came to this late. Minty and I had an interesting relationship. It started over at DM went through AS and ended here. We not only appeared to be polar opposites we were but we were never not friends. Looking at my PM inbox shows more messages from him than any two other posters from any of those three Mac forums.

Aside from saying I wish he'd been in a happier place when he died, I'm going to take a little time and post more later.

I'm late to the wake here, but just want to say that he'll be missed. It's amazing how close I feel to the posters here, even though I don't post often and have never met any of you. Since the days of DM, it's been a wonderful community. Days like this make me realize it.

Farewell Minty.

I am so sorry to hear this news. I certainly remember his regular participation in the forum, and regret that I've been too absorbed with work to notice that things were awry.

Minty:

Minty and I first met at the old DM. Both baseball fans and both losers. His curse was a goat mine a drunk orphan from Baltimore. We'd fantisize about the ultimate World Series Red Sox vs. Cubs where one of us would no longer be a loser. I wanted the Sox to win a Series; Minty just wanted the Cubs to do better than the White Sox. I got my wish, he didn't.

He said in no uncertain terms, if you're from Chicago you can be a Cubs fan or you can be a White Sox fan. You can't be both anymore than a Connecticut fan can be for the Red Sox and the Yankees. These worlds collide, they don't coexist. He long ago decided where to place his loyalty and when the White Sox won a Series he took no pleasure in it. When Sammy Sosa went south he took part of Minty with him.

Minty of course could never have been a New Englander because, with the exception of Steve Bartleman, he could never hold a grudge.

I looked into my PM box and found that Minty accounted for a lot of them. He did like to PM, not just me but a lot of people on the forum. It was one of his links to life. I usually answered but on reflection I think I could have put more into what I had to say. He only occasionally brought his real life problems into a PM and then only as an afterthought so it wasn't like he was complaining, actually he was a lot more positive in those PMs than in his forum posts.

He crashed and burned a while back. His family came to the rescue and moved him closer to them. He didn't see it that way. He was a fish out of water in Napa and his focus became his upset with them. He took every opportunity to get away, so much so we (he and I) almost met in LA. We didn't and I'm sorry for that.

Minty was obstinate and opinionated but never arrogant or abusive. He was someone you could have a drink and banter with but no drinks during the last 9 months. He had a long history of alcohol abuse and was still struggling with that at the end.

Minty was often my own personal punching bag, he didn't mind that and I'll miss him a lot. One positive aspect is that by now I'm sure he's forgiven Steve Bartleman.
