OK, I'm fed up with the spinning beachball. I've imported my cookies, passwords, and bookmarks. Now how do I get mail.app to use Firefox rather than Safari? How do I get Firefox to open PDFs in a browser window rather than downloading the PDF and asking me about it?

I rarely have trouble with either, actually.
I REALLY REALLY like FireFox, but I REALLY REALLY REALLY like Safari, despite the lack of tool bars and other stuff.
I use them both, but I have been using Safari from the beginning, and I simply like it - AND I especially like the Web Archive (save as) option, instead of PDFing it - because the links are live, and all the jpgs, etc., are embedded in the file.

Safari is the least compatible web browser out there and is a total pain to use. I keep a firefox session open at the same time for all the web pages safari can't open. The only reason I stick with safari at all is for the bookmark sync'ing via .mac and ever since Leopard that has been pretty hit or miss anyway.
Ok, now I will answer your question. Go into your safari preferences and change your default browser. Stupid place for that option, yet there it is.

[quote bryanus]face it, all browsers suck on the mac.
Are you willing to offer proof? Examples of better browsers on other platforms?
I use Linux and OS X and I can't remember when I've felt my browsers were not up to snuff. Try Opera (multi-platform), iCab (OS X, a better Safari than Safari, except Safari has slicker RSS support), Camino (OS X), Firefox 3 beta (multi-platform), OmniWeb (OS X), or Shiira (OS X). I'm sure I've overlooked many other fine examples.

Yahoo and the news videos are among the most annoying. They play the ads without fail. The play the news story... 90% fail.
FireFox always plays right.
Interesting note too.... Hotmail - where I still have an account started long before the Satan Gates bought them (1994?) doesn't even see Safari as a browser.
It says something like "You are attempting to reach this site using something organic. Please unplug that eggplant and use a computer."
