Just put a new car on credit card.

I just purchased a new Civic EX and the honda dealer would only let me put $3000 on my credit card. That's ok, I got the 2.9% financing and $2,000 off retail price.

Credit card purchases cost merchants about 3-4%, so a dealer's willingness to accept that cost is directly related to profits obtained elsewhere.

Bought a pair of motorcycles on Amex. The first, a GSXR1000 we agreed to an additional $100 to cover some of the fee. and the second, a Honda Goldwing, they took 1/2 on Amex, 1/2 cash. Dealer would not accept all o a credit card

I have a Chase miles card that recently lifted its maximum yearly limit. I put $140k on it last year and flew most of my flights free. Amazing.

[quote stephen]arichipirata, I pick up my new Mini Cooper S on Saturday morning and had given serious thought to much the same thing.

With tax it will be 33K. I figure I might put 12 on a credit card (the amount I was planning to put down from the sale of my other Mini) and then immediately pay it off. I have the Costco card and that would mean $120 bucks.

I just emailed my sales person to see if there is a max credit card amount.
Love those cars. I know you're excited. $33 grand for that little roller skate. whew.

I drove some old school minis on mountain roads in Italy years ago. They were about 3 inches above the road, and there was no way you could roll them. What a blast!

When I bought my Elantra in 2002, I put it on the card.

It had 57k on it and was still under warranty, but just shy of expiring. The bumper to bumper then was only 3/36. A day later the radiator fan crapped. The temp went soaring,
during my first daytime cruise, which happened to be straight to the dealer.

having had a temperamental beast like this before, I was able to keep it from red-lining, and I drove in, and they said $280, and I said "I didn't put this on my Visa because it was convenient. FIX IT FOR FREE or I leave it here and dispute the charge as "goods returned for refund."

They fixed it.

btw... if you live near one of the many scattered "Rick Case" dealers..... only visit them with one of these items.... http://forums.macresource.com/read/1/502119

I'd rather give that 1% fee to the local dealership than some yahoo in who knows where.

But then , I still try to support local vendors of goods and services than big box conglomerates. A tiny bit more may come out of my wallet, but a bit more of that theoretically supports the local economy.

When it comes to car dealers, they can afford the 1% fee.

They're just waiting to get you into finance to add about 35% to the total you'll pay over the life of the loan, for the unaware.

They are scum.

[quote MacArtist]I am guessing with the present state of the economy; they were just glad to sell a car.

Congrats on the purchase.
That's my guess, too.
