There is currently no shortage of gas in the US. The problems with gas prices is not a supply issue.

The $75 limit is not from your credit card company, it's in place to protect the station against fraud. Since they do not know what your purchase amount will be, they simply check the card against a database of cards to make sue the card is valid, but they do not know what limits may be placed. Often they simply authorize a $1 purchase.

Additionally, the gas station is said to be the first stop among purse snatchers and muggers trying to find out if a freshly stolen card has been blocked or not.

It is amazing how many people become HOSTILE when they are faced with this limit...they practically take the clerk's head off. Wish these people would wake up..it is not a challenge to your manhood. If you have no credit problem it should not kill you to perhaps go into the station, act like a polite human being, make your purchase arrangement, complete your purchase and head on down the road. The exercise might do you good as you walk to and from your car.
and remember, as special as you are, the world does not revolve around you

my tank only holds 12 gallons. I usually fill up at 8-10 gallons. Right now it's costing me about $40, so unless gas doubles in price (God forbid), I think I'm ok.
I'd just about kill to go back to $2 a gallon and $20 fill-ups.

I'd just about kill to go back to $2 a gallon and $20 fill-ups. You and me both. I've already had to cancel a road trip to Savannah from the Bay Area. I should just be able to hook onto random big rigs and be towed across the country.

Lowest price I've ever paid for gas...25.9 cent/gal in California as a teen. Highest price, about $8.00/gallon in south London about 3 years ago.

A couple of the local stations I fill up at have $50 limits on debit cards, $75 on credit. That is for purchases swiped at the pump. No limit on gas purchases if you go to the attendant and either sign a credit slip or enter a PIN on a debit/ATM card transaction.

True. Also, it was pretty common out here for somebody who "needed cash" for some emergency to offer to fill your tank using "their" card, and taking a discounted cash amount "because my baby is sick" or whatever. And not *entirely* unrelated, ARCO stations here in the South Bay (San Jose/Santa Clara/Silicon Valley) have been hit with augmented card readers that have been giving out account and PIN numbers as customers swipe their cards. I only go to one ARCO station, but have made it a habit to check the card slot for high mopery. |
