A couple of days ago, I posted how at least two of my programs - Opera and Word - would still show up in the Finder and Dock as running programs but not in Activity Monitor:
http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1...msg-713883
I used Onyx and cleared everything and things seemed fine until now. The problem is back. I have yet to shut down the MBP but I suspect that it might hang again.
Any further suggestions? I am going to run TTPro on it in a little while. Thanks.

use the activity monitor to force quit the apps - then restart
don't run ttp - can't imagine it would help

Activity Monitor goes through the motions of force quitting but it does not work.
Shutting down hangs once again.

You cleaned out your system, user, browser and font caches when you used Onyx?
Have you recently upgraded your Mac's RAM or added a USB or FireWire peripheral?

Yep, all of those caches cleaned out.
No new memory. Just started using a new 3G USB wireless modem and a cellphone that recharges through USB.

'Any chance you could stop using the 3G modem for awhile and see if that fixes it?
It could be something wacky with a corrupt cache causing the apps to quit improperly, but that issue seems to have been eliminated via Onyx.
The remaining scenario is that your apps are becoming "zombies." Some errant process is snagging them and becoming their "parent" when they go to quit. If it wasn't happening all along then some new app or previously unused driver is the most likely culprit and if you've added that modem recently...

Oh, I forgot...just added in a new Brother DCP-7030 but why would any new item only affect those two programs? And only after using them for a while.
I am switching over to a WLAN connection with another provider for the next day or so so we will see what happens.

I'm running about eight apps at a time.
