I was astounded to find the SS#s of dead relatives. How do they get this info.?

Once you're dead it's public information. They're useless numbers at that point.

I'm not sure what prompted you to look on that particular site for information, but I shun any that charge a fee. FamilySearch.org, which is hosted by the LDS church, has a lot of the same information available, and it's free. I just thought I'd let you know in case that's of some use to you or someone you know.

Wouldn't SS#s of dead people be useful to some bad guys, like for opening credit card accounts?

You'd be absolutely amazed if you knew how finely tuned and fast moving the flow of information is among financial institutions. After my husband died, I assumed the credit cards in my name could still be used. Well, that's not always true. I had a purchase declined just a couple of weeks after his death, because one credit card company received notification of his death and closed the account, since he was listed as the account owner. They might not be good at keeping track of some things, but they seem to know exactly who is dead and who isn't.

I ran my husband's name through both RootsWeb and GenealogyBank, and neither returned any results. He died in 2004, and I know he's in there. When I run it through FamilySearch, I got his date of birth, place he was living when his SS number was issued, and his date of death and the location. It's definitely the best of the three free choices we've given. Ancestry is fee-based, so I didn't check that one.

I was of the understanding that social security numbers are re-usable.
