Who is the worst President ever?

Yeah, mostly to gum up the works. Farmers don't need the Ag department to tell them how to plant corn. Most of their employees haven't set foot on a farm. And if you think that every bite you take is inspected by their inspectors you are in for a big surprise. Has anyone yet figured out how much corn we can buy for $95B?

Agreed.

Yet, companies like Cargill and ADM need the Ag to create and enforce regulations which guarantee that those farmers will be tithed to their coffers.

Here is how I look at it. Caterpillar makes the machinery, Monsanto makes the fertilizer, Exxon brings the fuel, Somebody sells the seeds, God(or nature if it makes some more comfortable) makes the rain, and Joe the Farmer provides the sweat. End of story.

Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry make up approximately 20% of the GNP last year - one of the largest single sectors.

USDA also oversees import/exports and the marketing and trade involved, many areas of conservation and environment,
research and science in the fields of animal & plants, etc.... They are also now part of Homeland Security.

Might want to update your knowledge base. You could always ask an Ag Economist

What a perfect picture. This is a pretty good description (with different names) of the horrendous unregulated dark ages of the early part of last century...extensive labor abuses, child sweatshops, industrial accidents galore, unsafe food, unfettered pollution of the rivers and skies, etc. Apparently, The Jungle was not required reading at your school.

Is this kind of simpleminded thinking the reason we end up with people like George Bush in charge? Does god also come along and cleanup the messes afterwards?

Careful, D, you'll incur the judgement of kj. So far he gives you the thumbs up but a couple more "venomous" posts like this you'll have to stand in the corner with me and Dennis.

No venom intended. I just called it as I saw it.

Hey, I'm in the corner too. If we get a fourth we can play bridge.

Not sure if GtDS plays bridge, but I'm sure he can learn.
