Freddie Hubbard - RIP

One of the giants of jazz and a genuine link back to other true giants - 'Trane, Monk, Cannonball and the rest.

I always had a soft spot for Freddie. He was more melodic than many and even criticized for being too commercial.

Yeah, I always liked him, too. Back in the day (well, my day, not the 1960s), it was a little wimpy to like him alongside the jazz renegades, but he was always too cool to ignore. Smooth as butter, I must say.

One of his nicest solos (IMHO) was of all places on a Billy Joel album on the tune "Zanzibar" http://www.jazztrumpetsolos.com/solo.asp...dieHubbard&Solo=Zanzibar
I think it exposed him to a whole new generation on young listeners - his style was very fluid and approachable.

I was on the forum some time ago trying to track down some good recordings of him. My first exposure to Freddie, oddly enough, was his bit on Billy Joel's "52nd Street" album; he smokes the hell out of the track "Zanzibar". (FWIW, a recent Billy Joel set, "My Lives" (which I just ordered) has the non-fadeout version of this track; am anxiously awaiting it to hear Freddie's full solo at full volume. [added: just read lafinfil's comment above about the same]

If I remember correctly, most said his solo album work wasn't his best; he didn't succeed commercially as well as a frontman as, say, someone like Maynard Ferguson. And, as lafinfil said, he had a fluid and approachable sound -- which I got from Zanzibar -- that made me want to hear more.

RIP, Freddie. Looks like Maynard's going to have some competition trying to unseat Gabriel.

One of my favorites, he will be missed. I got to see him in a small club here in PDX some years ago, before he lost his chops in the 90's due to a lip problem. He was the guy with the quintessential flugelhorn sound.
