Just installed my first compact fluorescent light bulb.

And it only took ME, myself and I to do it. So, none of these "how many AAAs does it take... jokes, okay? Smile

I will have to say that this 26W (GE brand) labeled as 100W equivalent seems noticeably dimmer than the 100W incandescent [spoiler=Ed.]
(the way God and Edison meant artificial light to be made)

bulb that it replaces.

What about a "welcome to year x" joke?

I've switched every light in my house to CFL (except for a couple candelabras) and haven't looked back. Some CFLs take more a few seconds to "warm up" to full output and I believe the brand of bulb makes a difference in perceived light output (not having a light meter to check, I'm just going by my impression). Also, the different light temperature output will make some seem less "brilliant" than others.

there are now incandesants that are labelled as 100 watt replacements that claim to last 20 % longer.
Um, yeah, they are 80 watt bulbs. The filament may last longer but not quite so bright.

(I just repplaced 4 lamps in a 5 lamp light and darn if the 4 new ones aren't quite as bright, carefully reading the packaging it is covered with 'caveats'. )

All this tricky labelling is getting absurd.
May as well put 'pot-luck' on the packaging.

I've stayed away from fluorescent because I've been an X10 household/user ever since I bought my first components from JS&A (Joe Sugarman? and associates) back in 1982 or so.

Since my XTension Mac died, and along with it my serial number for XTension, I have not wanted to re-invest $150 in a current XTension (get it X10-sion???) so I currently am not controlling dozens of modules.

It has been said that fluorescents interfere with X10's PL signals. I guess I'll find out now, since this new CFL is the closest lightbulb to my XTension powermac G4 server.

I just replaced the last non refrigerator incandescent! They are not as bright as labeled, but if you go to then next wattage up; you're still ahead on power. The smaller the base is, the slower it is to warm up to full briteness. I've got some sprirals under glass and in covered lamps; I've got some fake candles in the ceiling fan and some fake globes with small spirals underneath. Those are 3x15 watts that replaced 3x45 watts. Love them.

I've replaced quite a few but still have some that I haven't. Primarily the low voltage halogens in some track lights.

I'd also like to find some high wattage reflector style floods for that are dimable for my studio. I have ceiling cans
that currently have 65watt bulbs in them but they are pretty dim (gray room & 10 foot ceilings)

Anybody have a lead on a good high output model ? Since the fixtures are rated for 65watt I could get a
pretty bright CF in there if I could find them.

Thanks for the info about going up to the next wattage level. I finally picked up a few a couple months ago and am disappointed because they are so dim.

I'll try that tip for the next time.

Any suggestions for what to do with them after they die?
