Just the glue part. Only if it came out of a box . One never knows where that envelope has been.
Envelopes that came with a bill or invitation get spit on a fingertip.

I've used a corner of the sponge from the kitchen sink, too.

I buy the adhesive strip envelopes whenever possible. If they are with invites or thank you notes and I don't have a choice, I use a moistened cloth.

I printed some laser payment reply envelopes to send with statements to my customers, most of whom are older rural men. They kept coming back unsealed, with the paper peel-off strip still on. I finally figured out the customers were licking the envelopes and they were sticking long enough to get out of their sight. I figured this out after seeing my uncle do it with a peel-and-stick envelope.

I only send about a dozen or so envelopes a year, so yes.
