Depends on WHERE in Southern California, I suppose...
There are lots of places out in the desert, in a trailer, where $1600 would keep you going just fine. In an actual city? Only with great difficultly. Could it be done? Sure. You would not enjoy that lifestyle.

You'd have to be really flexible, but if that's net take home you could probably make it work.
Rent. Live with one or more roommates to avoid living in a really bad neighborhood. Transportation. If you've got great credit, a spotless driving record and are in the right age range you might be able to avoid the beat up used car route or, even worse, public transportation. Be prepared to be a K-Mart shopper. Some people are wizards at pinching a penny. I wouldn't want to do it for long if I could help it.
