Will it be any faster if I take it to the local retail store, rather than calling the 800 number?
How long does AppleCare repair of a MacBook Pro usually take?

You get a box delivered overnight, and you send that in. Two or three days later, the box returns with your MBP repaired. At least, that's my experience.

I took my MBP to an Apple store yesterday at about 4:30.
They diagnosed a failed GPU on the spot and said I could pick it up before 9 PM when they closed. I was quite pleased. YMMV. Oh, and this was a free repair on an out of warranty machine! Awesome!

I brought in a 24" iMac with a failed optical drive. They had it back to me by lunchtime the next day. I know that's a lot faster than shipping it back to Apple.

Drop off is probably the fastest, if it's a convenient drive. Shipping adds 2 days minimum, but actual service is done within 24 hours of arrival at the service depot, if the part is in stock ofc, in my experience.
For me, my last repair was a local drop off at an Apple affiliate shop (not an Apple Store)...less than 24 hours turn around for a logic board replacement on my MBP.

It's usually faster if you call Applecare, have them send you a box with prepaid shipping (it has alway arrived next day for me) and send it in. I've complete turnarounds in as little as 3 days. If you take it to the store, it often takes 2 days extra as they check the computer out and back in.
