Do we need an internet Czar?
#1
Exactly what can he(or she) do? The position has been named but no outline of job description other than security on the NET which is almost an oxymoron...

Curbing the internet is an impossiblity except as directed from your home computer...so...what do you think?

I didn't know if this should be on this side or the "dark side". Hope I'm not wrong.

You have no idea what is going on in the IT security world. What virus protection programs help to block is tinker toy relative to some real threats. There are far more security threats than you don't hear about.

Yes I agree with a czar. Homeland Security shouldn't be the end point for IT security.

Sometimes government involvement in internet security can be a good thing and can work.

http://www.cert.org/faq/cert_faq.html

The CERT/CC, a major center for internet security problems, was established in November 1988, after the "Morris Worm" brought down much of the internet and demonstrated the growing network's susceptibility to attack. Shortly after that, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) charged the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) with both establishing a capability to quickly and effectively coordinate communication among experts during security emergencies in order to prevent future incidents and building awareness of security issues across the Internet community. CERT/CC staff members provide technical advice and coordinate responses to security compromises, identify trends in intruder activity, analyze product vulnerabilities, work with other security experts to identify solutions to security problems and ways to prevent the problems in the future, and disseminate information to the broad community.

And the other 99 times out of 100, it introduces another layer of bureaucracy and over-regulation.

Why don't they show us they can stop something simple like SPAMmers and email spoofing. Then we can get a bejeweled crown made for the new "Czar".

I agree with PaulF. Just look at the TSA to get an idea of what to expect. Basically job security for politicians and their cronies that would cost the public way too much for any benefits provided.
