My favorite strings are Jim Pearse phosphor bronze. My Ovation Legend loved them. When I can't find those I get D'Addario phosphor bronze. Martin Marquis strings sound great for about an hour and then go dead. If you think he won't be changing strings for a while, go for the Elixir nanowebs.

Coming from electric guitar, his fingers will probably want light gauge strings. Personally, I prefer medium or medium-light gauge.
