I'm quite happy with my close-out D40 that I got at Walmart for $125 (with kit lens). A
Nikon battery and charger set me back another $60. $185 for a DSLR, not bad, eh? Let's see, one D3S at $5200 or a D40 at $200. pRICE cUBE will back me up, but it's always been the "lens behind the lens" that matters most. If you don't agree, then check this out: http://www.amazon.com/Best-Camera-One-Th..._1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1255528917&sr=1-1
As Chase writes, “Inherently, we all know that an image isn’t measured by its resolution, dynamic range, or anything technical. It’s measured by the simple—sometimes profound, other times absurd or humorous or whimsical—effect that it can have upon us. If you can see it, it can move you.”

WHile there are some advantages gained in pro models, most of those features are not really needed by most people. You have to judge for yourself what the point of diminishing returns are. When I don't need the D3 for action/sports I use a D80 for my macro shooting.
