Seems worth treating it as though the last mechanic who changed the oil was the one who stripped the threads and installed the temp.

Try going back to him to complain since the only plausible reason for him to not tell you about the temp is to avoid taking responsibility for doing the damage...

Sounds like a good episode of People's Court...
