Dunno why it's designed that way... It might be designed to easily come off to switch between positions for the left and right ear.
I had a Motorola headset that worked like that and not only did it fall off of my ear, but also the speaker constantly shifted away from my ear when I moved my head. It was very annoying.
The only BT headsets that I use any more are the banana-shaped Jabras with the in-ear gel thingies. They are the most comfortable headsets that I've ever used, they always sound loud and clear and I never had a problem with one falling out of my ear.
