Apple did make their own hard drives, code-named Widget. I used to have to start mine up with the help of a pencil eraser to get the exposed hub to spin up in the morning. There was a "hey, we can do this" spirit about the company at the time. They also did their own manufacturing, for the most part.

But they had the sense to realize they weren't a hard drive company, and quit. A $ 50 million lesson.
