Failing hard drive... help advise!

do you know how many GB of data you're trying to save? If it's less than 10 or so, you might be able to get it backed up without doing anything else. If it's a ton of data, you may want to do DW first, though that won't really do much for a drive that's facing impending mechanical failure.
