Was gonna say that being stressed by wind is what a plant needs to grow more sturdy, but thought I'd better check the link first :-)
Assuming the staking was in response to a flimsy trunk, rather than the cause, but I have to wonder if the tree is otherwise (too) protected from the elements.

Any chance a neighbor has one of them thrashing exercise belts from the 50s hanging out in a garage or basement? You could use it to stress the tree a few hours a day . . . or hire a neighborhood kid to shake it.
