Most tree staking done after a transplant is to stabalize the root ball until it grows new roots. In some case also to stop tender new root growth damage in wind.
A tree (plant) trunk needs to strengthen in the wind.
Any one who has tried to grow trees inside a protected environment like a greenhouse or dome becomes aware of this when thier trees bend over.
Knowing nothing about eucalyptus it sounds like an understory tree with genetic symbiotic dependency .
There are some trees (even around here) that get topped for thier own longevity. I think they are ugly and wouldn't plant them, but there must be some attraction, possibly scent or flowers.
