If you're going to stake a tree, stake it in the direction of the prevailing winds. Where I live, in Sacramento, the winds either come from the north or the south, so here staking should be done from only those two directions. You want some movement of the trunk of the tree to strengthen it, but you don't want 50 mph winds to damage it. After the trunk is strong, the staking needs to be removed.
