I don't think that they did anything irresponsible. They should have had better supplies in their vehicle, but that applies to EVERYONE who travels in the winter outside of major metro areas. Cell phone coverage is nice, but not a necessity. Quite a bit of the US doesn't have cell phone coverage, certainly not in the places that I most like to go. Most people in big cities have NO CLUE how big the US is and just how remote a location you can be in within 5 minutes of an interstate. I've had my truck get snowed in at a snowpark because 3 feet of snow fell during the time I was in the woods. That sucked, but I had a tent, sleeping bag, avalanche shovel, food, fuel...all the necessities. I spent quite a bit of time digging the truck out until I got close enough that one of the plow trucks could help to pull me out. I never really appreciated the size of the US until I moved across the country. It is big...REALLY big.
