Actually, I finally called AppleCare.
It seems that the way I have always plugged in my peripherals is not the optimal way. Who knew . . .?
I always plugged everything in and then turned on the computer. We redid a few things and then he sent me a KB doc that states to turn on the computer, plug in the monitor, close lid and let the computer go to sleep. Wake the computer with lid closed, using external monitor.
I've always done it my way for YEARS with more than one laptop and never had an issue. I guess my luck ran out. I'll have to see if the fix lasts . . .
