Alas, what is 'right' is not defined by the rules of American Law, but by the rules of Italian law. Welcome to the basic reality of travel.
And any American that thinks they can get treated differently because 'they're American' is a moron who failed to read the notes in their passport. (none of them do).
It comes across as a bad 'horror trip' movie.
Actually, when it comes to murder, it's not an ambiguous thing. Either she's actually guilty of murder, or she isn't. In which case, she's been held in Italy wrongly for two years. The more I read about this tragedy, the more the prosecution's case looks fraudulent and superstition-based. I hope her defense can get her out of there.
A fair legal system would have thrown the case out a long time ago. The murderer has already been captured and convicted. Knox was caught in a trap, a bizarre, lurid tabloid biblical purgatory.
But I agree about her cluelessness, bad judgement, and lack of respect for the reality of studying abroad. Now she's ensnared in a murky legal system in a backwards catholic medieval village. She reminds me of the drunk, trusting, irresponsible college girls I met in Costa Rica, blissfully unaware of Latin American macho social customs and the potential for danger. It's as though they think the world is like Disneyland.
Verdict may come as soon as Friday.
