I disliked what they did to an otherwise enjoyable fantasy story. I strongly disliked that they decided to have Max run away and find the boat rather than use his imagination to transform his room. That to me was the crux of the entire (original) story.
However, I thought the effects, set, costumes, etc were great, and right on the money.
It made my 9 year old cry, and got to me too. So it was good as its own interpretation -- re-imagining, I guess -- but it sucked as a film version of "Where the Wild Things Are", so I don't care if they put it off as a rental by a few years. I won't be buying or renting it, or watching it when it comes on free TV.
