I like AirTran a lot. The one thing I don't think you get with the upgrade on longer flights is meal service - just nicer and more snacks. The majors usually kick in a meal if you are on a cross-country flight.
Seats are comparable to those in the front on other major airlines' single aisle jets. AirTran only has DC 9/MD 80/717s and 737s. No widebodies with lie-flat seats or entertainment systems.
As mentioned, it's not a bad deal if you have bags to check.
