Why don't kids walk home from school these days?

I walked to school when I was in first grade, maybe K -- I don't remember.
Later, after we moved, I took a school bus, then public transportation from around sixth-grade on because middle school was clear across town.

High school, I was able to ride a bike but it was too far to walk to, though I walked home a few times.
