I guess I should have mentioned before I posted, I had to walk about a mile from my house to the bus stop each way as a child. I'm guessing that I was an exception though and not the rule, generally speaking. The walk back and forth was both good exercise and very entertaining, because the area where I lived was full of interesting wildlife, or at least it was to a ten-year old boy.
But in all seriousness, I remember seeing wildlife there as a child which is apparently no longer there, which is very sad... examples:
