Um . . . this does not provide any clarification.
But I'd infer from the "transferring network settings" message that it was indeed Migration Assistant.
And the hangup sounds like just another one of Migration Assistant's many bugs.
Black is correct. Knowing there was a good chance I'd be dealing with a replacement drive, I contacted the friendly folks at SuperDuper before starting on this project. Dave Nanian advised me to connect the laptop with the replacement internal drive to the external FW drive, and use Migration Assistant to point to the SuperDuper backup on the FW drive. The replacement internal drive already had an OS on it and, upon starting up for the first time, went through the "welcome" process.
