Oh, and if it's a Motorola Surfboard, there's a "standby" switch on the top that's easy to bump. Symptoms are that the modem will go through all lights on the front upon being plugged in and then they'll turn off.

Thanks, but that link only refers to hardware set up. I need to know the settings for the Network Preference Pane after she plugs in the ethernet cable.
