If you saved you SHSH you can go back to 4.0.
I did not; am I screwed?
I'm new to this whole JB thing, so don't know what my SHSH is, nor exactly what is required to be able to JB/unlock my iPhone...
The SHSH is in my layman's terms a signature file that permits you to install a specific firmware on a specific iPhone. In other words, it is generated specifically for each phone and each firmware. So, one cannot use an SHSH file from a friend to install on another phone.
To get your SHSH, the best way to do it, whether you are jailbroken or not, is to use a utility called the Firmware Umbrella. You can download it here:

According to the author's latest post, you still may be able to get your SHSH files for 4.0 but as he states, you probably have hours to do it, not days.
While the README file for Firmware Umbrella is ok, here is a good tutorial on how to use it from iClarified.com:

Good luck!
