There's really nothing surprising in the results. Those who end up as atheists and agnostics have a great deal of soul searching and investigation behind them. One can not simply shed the cultural affinity for faith without intellectual work.
That simplistically explains the terrier grip on religious faith that the uninformed maintained. Look no further than the radical Muslim movement in poverty ridden nations as opposed to Muslims in places like the United States or Jordan. The farther removed from education, the stronger the bonds to the supernatural and magical creations of "those who know best".
