L.A. Times: "Health insurers pour money into GOP campaigns, hoping to limit new regulations"

[quote=Ted King]So how do the Republicans in congress deal with this? Do they do the bidding of the health insurance companies that have given them so much financial support by keeping (and perhaps strengthening) mandatory coverage? Wouldn't that piss off their base? Or do they try to get mandatory coverage eliminated, which would piss off the insurance companies? I don't see how Republicans are going to thread this needle. What do you think?

This is why one has to admire the GOP. They will probably opt for keeping and perhaps strengthening mandatory coverage, but will use their talk radio/FOX mouthpieces to convince the voters to pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
Actually, my hunch is that the GOP'ers in Congress will put forth some legislation that ostensibly will say that it would do away with mandatory coverage, but through their health insurance lobbyist buddies they would secretly assure the health insurance companies that it wouldn't actually go anywhere (wink, wink). That way they could placate the Tea Partiers with a sham and still make sure the health insurance companies get what they want. I suppose that description sort of fits under your characterization of "pay attention to the man behind the curtain". If it happens that way it will be interesting to see if the Tea Partiers are naive enough to not see what has happened.
