Probably a question w/o an answer, but I need to restore from an incremental BU w/o the original BU software
#1
I'm donating my time to an animal rescue organization and their server computer blew the HDD, Windblows, of course, and the drive wouldn't mount at all - bad noises coming from within. I got a new drive, reinstalled Vista (what it came with) and looked at the backup kept on another computer. The computer is used as a file server for a Shelter program that maintains records of all dogs that go through. Computers in the network run client software that accesses the database files kept on the server I fixed.

Nobody knows what backup software was used and, of course, it's gone with the dead server HDD. No original disks. The person who sold and installed the software is no longer in the area and may not even be found for a telephone consult.

It did incremental BUs, looks like the base backup was done 02/210 and it appears all those files are there. Then it did incremental BUs daily. So the directory is huge, with approximately 40 files copied per day Not sure what the original full file count is, but I should be able to find that out from the Shelter Software maker. The real thorn in the ointment is that I believe the files are compressed.

If not for that, I thought I might have some success by copying the entire backup directory to another disk and then manually go through the incremental BUs, replacing the original BU files with those that are the most recent until I reached the last BU date. I believe the file compression will kill me though.

Any thoughts or experiences to offer will be appreciated. I have the next couple days to ponder this (and wish to heaven I hadn't volunteered).
