I've had to organize photos since the pre-iPhoto days so in the Finder I use a Year/Month-Day Eventname nomenclature. I suppose I have to do more organization to keep it handy as I have ~40K pics over 11 years but with OS X's large icons, I can preview all the pics there and open the ones I want in Preview.

I've used iPhoto to organize pictures for small events and projects and it was the right tool for the job. I've been thinking of trying iPhoto '11 to see if the features and speed increases make it worth the transition to it but my system does work well. For me.

I'm doing the same for music as I'm also pre-iTunes so I'd already set up my preferred Finder folder structure and still haven't found iTunes to be more efficient.
