A "compound" can also simply be a cluster of buildings surrounded by a wall or fence, the fortified part isn't a prerequisite. For example, the Kennedy Compound in Hyannis Port or the Bush Compound in Kennebunkport, both of which have security of course but I wouldn't define them as being fortified.
It occurs to me that perhaps this is Dakota's problem: he thinks a "compound" has to be a mansion of some sort.
