thanks for the input, folks. Might be good to just skip this one, due to all of the unknowns.
Now, in reviewing specs for the Trek 1.2, that frame is aluminum as well. I assume the same caveats apply there as well. So, if I need to look for something with a steel frame, any recommendations?

The Surly Long Haul Trucker is one that some friends used on a cross-country trip and really liked:

The Surly doesn't list pricing, but I assume $1,000+. The trek retails for just under $1,500. Do i really need to spend that much for a decent bike? My $750-ish budget is quickly feeling inadequate.
