and with AWD vehicles if you want to use it on one tire they require you to buy three new ones even if the difference in circumference is within spec.
That was not the case with our car. We bought a new set of tires and one got a hole in the sidewall within a few weeks. We took it back and it had to be replaced. The rest of the set were still close enough in tread depth that it wasn't a problem.
Only issue was they didn't have the correct tire in the shop so it had to be ordered, and we had to drive on the small spare for a few days which is very much not the same size as the others. To remedy that situation from happening again we bought a 5th matching wheel and tire which fits fine in the spare area of the trunk, and got rid of the small spare. I rotate all 5 tires on my own now, although I'm sure they would do it there.
When was this and in which state?
Fall of last year, in Maryland.
Yes directional treads make a 5 wheel rotation difficult as you would need to remount one of the tires every time.
