If you only eat rice occasionally, and perhaps as a side dish, then, sure, maybe you don't need or want a rice cooker. But in a vegetarian household, brown rice or other grain is the foundation of a lot of meals, and the wonderful rice cooker is a time-saving, stress-reducing, sanity-preserving device. Doubly or trebly so if there are small children vying for the cook's attention along with the always-present work deadlines.
I still love and use my rice cooker even now that my kids are grown, just not as often, because a batch of rice and lentils will last me for several days. Still, that's 45 to 55 minutes I'm not minding a pot on a burner. Oh my yes.
