i travel a fair amount and am neutral on the TSA. however, items were stolen out of checked luggage long before the TSA came about. it has always been known NOT to check valuables. who knows if theft is happening more but now the non-TSA thieves know no one will be looking for them as the TSA has keys and is everyone's favorite whipping boy.
