I found the same as decay. When our kids were little we had some kids' infrared headphones with a transmitter we plugged into our TV. Also had one for use with a small TV in the car. It's the same system that car video systems use now. That brand isn't available, but there are other kid's IR headphones available.

The problem is that all of the transmitters I could find are relatively bulky and require an A/C adapter.
I looked to see if anyone made an IR transmitter for the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad, but all that I could find were geared to working as a remote control, not for sending audio. (Makes me wonder if one of these could transmit audio if someone wrote an app for that.) The closest I found is an enclosure for mounting an iPad in a car which contains an IR audio transmitter.
Looks to me like a niche that's being missed.
