If you don't mind attaching something to the rear of the speaker, try this:
cut a 3/4" sheet of plywood to the dimensions of the rear. Rip it lengthwise at an acute angle (30 degrees or so). Mount the top portion to the speaker rear. Attach the lower portion to the wall (hitting the studs, if possible). Paint the edges of the plywood black or to match the speaker. The speaker "hangs" on the lower portion attached to the wall, along its entire length (speaker width). This is VERY solid and requires no shelves.
