I have no idea when any of the Apple senior staff were told of Steve's death. Maybe they knew prior to the Apple Event, maybe not.
Certainly some of them knew of his condition for a time, days weeks, months, I don't know.
But I don't think Tim Cook is the of the same presentation cloth as Jobs. Look at the various Jobs interviews and see how quick he is, especially with a light joke now and then. I just don't think that's Tim.
As for the MacLife article, we don't know that they had any actual knowledge that Steve was terminally ill. They, like people here, could have guessed at any number of scenarios.
I see it as an unfortunate coincidence, not prescient, not in poor taste. Now if somebody has footage of the staff meeting showing otherwise, I'd concede.
