I agree with rgG that it was maybe "trying too hard to be edgy, different, sexy, and weird," but I'm sick of being bored by clunky, big budget over-hyped series with pretensions of grandeur, of being transcendent TV (eg Boardwalk Empire). Compared with that, I'd rather have edgy, different, sexy, and weird. I must admit that the down and dirty sometimes has an allure for me that escapes the high and mighty. YMMV, of course.
