If she is someone apt to catch the bug the D90 would be a better choice because it has the pin motor for older lenses to autofocus. The only downside is the movie mode is 720p and uses a lousy codec and overheats after 5 minutes.

Cameras such as the D3100, d5100 have no pin motor so AF only with the new lenses with built in motors.
