The cables have temp sensors on the end and replace the cable that plugs into the HD. Just because the cable fit on the end of your new HD doesn't mean there is anything on the other end inside the hard drive actually doing anything.

the cable is connected, but without the Apple ROM/firmware on the hard drive, it's not doing its job.
Supposedly the 2009 iMac can work without the Apple ROM as long as the replacement drive is close to the model of the original (e.g. same series, different capacity.)
