I've owned neither, but I think it depends on your perspective of what makes a camera nicer than another. I'd argue that for intrinsic picture-taking ability the D3000 is just as good, as would be the D40/D60 that came before.
As you look at the differences here you'll see most of the "performance" upgrades are feature upgrades instead, if you get my drift.
dpreview does mention higher ISO performance, which will come in handy with the slow lenses it will likely be paired with ... but also describes the two main "upgrades" as being live view and the ability to shoot videos---neither of which will really help take better pictures.
